Scientists are unsure of why Hawaiian volcanoes abruptly stop erupting.

Mauna Loa, Kilauea had been erupting almost constantly for more than a year. Scientists don’t know whether there is a link between the two eruptions. “We’re getting better at forecasting the onset of eruptions because we have so much data now,” scientist says. Volcanologists believe the latest Kilauea eruption stopped sometime between Dec. 6 and Dec. 9. Mauna Loa’s eruption was on par with the length of similar eruptions in the past, Hon says. The lava flow stopped more than a mile and a half from a busy highway.
