On a weekend holiday, Duke Energy cuts electricity as the grid is taxed by the cold.

Temporary power outages hit nearly 340,000 customers in the Carolinas on Christmas Eve. Duke Energy: Outages are necessary to extend available power generation and help maintain operations. Temperatures dipped into the single-digit wind chills for much of North and South Carolina. The National Weather Service issues wind-chill warnings for western parts of the Carolinas. Louisiana’s fire marshal reports “several instances of widespread power outages”. The attention on North Carolina’s power grid comes after substations were shot at last month.
