China just had the lowest temperature on record, minus 63 degrees.

China’s northernmost city of Mohe saw a temperature dip to minus-63.4 degrees (minus-53 Celsius) on Sunday. That’s the coldest in modern times measured in the country during modern times. Cold extremes such as this have become uncommon in recent decades because of climate change. The temperature in Aldan, China, dipped to minus-58 degrees (minus-50 Celsius) over the weekend. Other locations in China, including Huzhong, broke records Saturday.

The frigid air is now on the move eastward. It is set to spread over eastern China, Japan, parts of eastern Russia Tuesday and Wednesday.
