Bob Martinez was inaugurated as governor of Florida on Jan. 6, 1987. He was the first Republican governor of the state in 15 years and the first Hispanic chief executive. “The time when Democrats ruled Tallahassee unchallenged are clearly gone,” a newspaper’s report said. The state had become one of the fastest-growing in the country, and its population was exploding. “Our potential and our opportunities increase with the arrival of every new Floridian,” he said.
