The FBI search of Mar-a-Lago instantly became entangled with politics

Frida Ghitis: Donald Trump says FBI search of Mar-a-Lago was politically motivated. She says there is no reason to think the FBI’s action was triggered by politics. Ghitis says there's little indication that Democrats are worried about Trump's candidacy in 2024. She adds that the idea that this search would negatively affect Republican chances in November seems misplaced. She says it risks mobilizing Republicans against the government in much the same way that the Roe v. Wade decision energized Democrats in the midterms did in Roe v.-Witchitch.Ghitis: If Trump's narrative about the search being politically motivated takes hold, the ramifications in terms of motivating Republican voters will be negative for Biden, not positive.

The search of Mar-a-Lago makes very real the possibility that Trump might face criminal prosecution, says Julian Zelizer. Zelizer: It was inevitable that any serious law enforcement action targeting Trump would trigger the sort of politics-laden response that emerged nearly simultaneously with the news itself. Trump spent much of his time and energy insisting that, despite objective evidence, the FBI and the Justice Department were hopelessly biased, Zelizer says. That works much better for him than treating the search as serious and, if you’ll pardon the pun, warranted, than treating it as serious.
