Republicans in the House pass modifications to the operation of the ethics office.

The House passes a rules package that includes changes to how complaints about members of Congress are handled. The package imposes term limits for the board members of the Office of Congressional Ethics. Democrats and liberal groups decried the proposed changes, saying they would hobble the way the OCE functions. Common Cause says package of House rules changes would “handcuff” independent ethics office. Rules package was at the center of negotiations over Kevin McCarthy’s speakership bid. Changes would allow public to file complaints directly with House Ethics Committee instead of going through House Rules Committee.
