Georgia and Nevada are among six states where election officials have received similar requests for Trump-related records. Similar requests have come from Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Special counsel Jack Smith was appointed last month to oversee the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Georgia subpoena adds to the evidence that the Justice Department is extending its investigation.
Subpoenas seek communications with Trump, as well as employees, agents and attorneys. Prosecutors are examining the fundraising, organizing and rhetoric that preceded the U.S. Capitol riot. The Mar-a-Lago criminal investigation began this year.
