McCarthy’s detractors in the House have long opposed him.

About 20 House Republicans opposed Kevin McCarthy’s bid to be elected speaker of the House. Some of those opponents are new to the House; most, 16 of them, have served in the House for years. As ideology shifts to the right, frequency of agreeing with McCarthy plunges. Spartz voted with McCarthy 92.5 percent of the time in the 117th Congress; Higgins and Gaetz voted against him. This year’s opposition to McCarthy was not sporadic, but broad.
