McCarthy assumes the position of speaker as the GOP considers its new goal: government

McCarthy and his allies successfully negotiated a deal last week that put the gavel in his hands. Rules package will govern the House for the first time. Moderate Republicans have objected to the rules package over concerns McCarthy ceded too much power to hard-right conservatives. McCarthy worked through the weekend and Monday to sway new objectors to vote in favor of the rules package. Republicans can only afford to lose four votes to pass legislation, and leaders will have to continually balance the desires of the disparate factions of the conference. Democrats will almost certainly look to highlight the divisions to voters.
