Crime in New York City is up, but it has been far worse in the past. In 1990, there were nearly 530,000 crimes that fell into those most-violent categories. That was at a point when the city’s population was 14 percent smaller than it is now. The country’s urban-rural political divide runs deep. In the 2020 presidential election, rural counties backed Donald Trump by 32 points.
Large urban counties backed Joe Biden by the same margin. A majority of Americans think that the government does too little for people living in rural areas.
