Fear of American cities that is exaggerated and overtly politicized

Crime in New York City is up, but it has been far worse in the past. In 1990, there were nearly 530,000 crimes that fell into those most-violent categories. That was at a point when the city’s population was 14 percent smaller than it is now. The country’s urban-rural political divide runs deep. In the 2020 presidential election, rural counties backed Donald Trump by 32 points.

Large urban counties backed Joe Biden by the same margin. A majority of Americans think that the government does too little for people living in rural areas.
