the final day of air hockey

Bob Greene: I gave away my air hockey table for Hanukkah and Christmas. He says it was an aspirational part of childhood, coveted by few but coveted by all. Greene: Ping-pong and pool tables were more for grown-ups. Foosball got boring after 10 minutes. When I was growing up, my childhood dream wasn’t so much about air hockey as it was about companionship.

My dad was always working, my mom was running a household, my two older sisters were uninterested in baseball or superheroes. Our kids are fortunate in this because they’re never really by themselves.
