Opinion In the skies over Belarus, a false bomb report signaled danger on the ground

A new report details the events in Minsk, Belarus, on May 23, 2021, on a Ryanair flight. Peter Bergen: The plane was flying from Athens to Vilnius, over the territory of Belarus. He says a KGB man told the flight crew that a bomb was on board and should land at Minsk. Bergen says the KGB man and others in the tower ordered a false report of a bomb on board, causing the plane to land in Minkis. He writes: The report throws into high relief the dangers of a dictator such as Alexander Lukashenko, who respects no rules but his own, using trickery and lies to divert a plane.
