More housing is required in the D.C. area. Acting is necessary right now.

The D.C. Housing Authority’s occupancy rate is the lowest of all comparable agencies in the country. Less than 74 percent of the roughly 8,000 units under its management are occupied. Mayor has proposed dissolving the current board and replacing it with a nine-member version. Plan would institute a nine-member board along with reforms aimed at enhanced accountability and transparency. Median home sales price in the Washington metro area is about $650,000, among the highest in the country.

Plan has support of D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, and vote is likely at council’s final legislative meeting.
