Frida Ghitis: U.S. scientists say they’ve reached a major breakthrough in nuclear fusion. She says getting there for even a trillionth of a second required an array of 192 huge lasers. This is a long way from the dream of nuclear power that is safe and cheap, she says. Scientists have achieved net energy gain from a fusion reaction, potentially the biggest news of the decade. The hurdles to get there are enormous, possibly the most complicated engineering project humanity has ever undertaken. I won’t try to sketch out how much steady, reliable, indefinitely renewable clean energy could transform society.
