A benefactor accomplished good in Turkey. Today, he is serving a life sentence.

A Turkish court upholds a life sentence against philanthropist Osman Kavala, based on a sham prosecution. He was arrested on charges of attempting to overthrow the government and the constitutional order through force and violence. Charges were vaguely related to 2013 protests against Erdogan’s authoritarianism. Frida Ghitis: The only right thing to do is to free Kavala, who was entirely engaged in peaceful protest. She says each case bears Mr. Erdogan’s fingerprints; the judicial system is not independent. Ghitis: U.S., Europe cannot fail to speak out about his lunge toward autocracy.
