Virginia releases third version of standards for history, social studies lessons. Revision process became embroiled in political controversy after governor’s appointees halted process. Final approval from board is months away; standards could be in place by 2024-2025 school year. Virginia’s new history and social studies standards are “fact-based,” Education Secretary Vivian Balow said. She said the previous version of standards had been cleansed of “errors and omissions”. It lays out a broad framework for teaching history in Virginia that seems to navigate left-leaning and right-leaning theories.
