The first female president of GWU is identified as Ellen Granberg.

Ellen Granberg is provost of the Rochester Institute of Technology. She succeeds Thomas LeBlanc, whose four-year term was marked by controversies. The private university counted 25,939 students in the fall, including 2,941 freshmen. GWU’s head count of first-year students is the largest for the university. Granberg has been provost at RIT since 2018 and spent 17 years on the faculty at Clemson.

“I’ve known about and admired GW for a long, long time,” Granberg says. Board chair: Granberg will bring “energy and excitement” to the university as it seeks to become a top research institution.
