Scholarships provide a lesson in American democracy for Ukrainian students.

Andrii Umanskyi’s hometown of Skadovsk, Ukraine, is under Russian occupation. He is one of 20 Ukrainian students chosen for a year-long scholarship. The scholarship was created by Garry Kasparov, Daniel Lubetzky and retired Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman. An estimated 1.5 million Ukrainian college students displaced from educational opportunities. Aid can solve immediate problems such as hunger, but education will be essential for solving future problems. Lubetzky’s appreciation for American democracy came from his father, who was forced into Dachau concentration camp.
