On the problematic state college savings scheme, Maryland legislators plan hearings.

Maryland lawmakers will hold hearings on account-calculation problems in the Maryland Prepaid College Trust. Hundreds of families have been unable to access their accounts since the summer. State auditors plan to delve into the freeze as well as whether Maryland 529 has addressed management issues. Maryland 529 has prioritized about 430 families who needed immediate distributions. A spokeswoman says the error stemmed from a technical problem in applying a new accrual rate. General Assembly hearings will start as Maryland’s Office of Legislative Audits begins work on a routine fiscal review.
